Hyper-V Server 2012 vs Windows Server 2012 Standard -
i'm looking test of new features in hyper-v 2012 (v3).
hyper-v v3 can downloaded "free" version "hyper-v server 2012", or can purchased part of windows server 2012 standard or datacenter. however, usual licensing unclear.
on 1 hand ms talk free edition in several (many) sites. on other hand, when go actual download site talks trial. me trial has expiry date makes me nervous. use windows standard 2012 license part of microsoft action pack subscription (maps), i'm not sure i'm entitled to.
so question is: real differences between free (trial) download of hyper-v server 2012 , paid-for windows server core 2012 have install key. "trial" version expire?
no, hyper-v server 2012 doesn't expire.
hyper-v server quite bit server standard core of roles except hyper-v (and other supporting roles , features) removed.
now, in server 2012, can add full ui server core editions, that's not option hyper-v server 2012 - command-line. means typical management ui tools won't run on hyper-v server 2012, you'll need machine can manage remotely (the powershell cmdlets hyper-v do work on hyper-v server, though).
hyper-v server isn't people want "play around" hyper-v - it's designed people want boost hyper-v infrastructure more physical hosts, , want run lightweight os in root partition, leaving resources available vms.
if want used hyper-v or test things out it, don't have experience managing hyper-v remotely already, stick full version of windows server (or windows 8 pro/enterprise x64, have hyper-v).
