azure - Downtime experienced swapping instances of different sizes -


in production running 3 small instances of web role. in staging have 3 extra small instances of web role. when swapped them out site experienced 2 minutes of downtime wasn't expecting.

according article update, upgrade , vip-swap windows azure service–what differences? shouldn't have occurred. why downtime experienced during swap , there way swap roles of different instance sizes without experiencing downtime?

adding michael has mentioned - there shouldn't have been downtime. however, if you're swapping xtra-small instances "cold" , have been deployed into, iis need recompile sites , bring them online. xtra-small instances notoriously slow.

thus: downtime have been caused compilation/caching/app-start/etc.
